Seoul Subway Guide 101: How to Buy & Use T-money Card (Tourist Tips)

Hello travelers! I'm Buddy, your local guide to all things Korea.

If you are planning a trip to Seoul, you’ve probably heard that our subway system is one of the best in the world. It’s clean, fast, cheap, and goes everywhere. But, looking at that giant spiderweb of a subway map can be a little intimidating, right?

Don't worry! The secret to unlocking Seoul is a magical little card called T-money. Here is everything you need to know to navigate the city like a local.

1. What is a T-money Card?

Think of T-money as your "Key to the City." It is a rechargeable smart card that you can use for:

• Subways and Buses: Tap on and off to pay fares.

• Taxis: Most taxis accept T-money payment.

• Convenience Stores: You can even buy snacks at GS25, CU, or 7-Eleven using the balance on your card!

Why do you need it?

While you can buy single-journey tickets with cash, it takes time and you have to pay a deposit every trip. Using a T-money card gives you a discount on every ride and allows for free transfers between buses and subways (within 30 minutes).

2. Where to Buy the Card

Getting a card is super easy. You don't need to go to a special bank or office.

• Convenience Stores: Walk into any CU, GS25, 7-Eleven, or Emart24. Just ask the clerk, "T-money card, please."

• Subway Stations: Look for the "Card Vending Machines" located near the ticket gates.

💰 Cost: The empty card costs usually between 2,500 KRW to 4,000 KRW (approx. $2–$3 USD). Special designs with K-pop stars or cute characters might cost a bit more!

3. How to Top Up (The Important Part!)

Once you buy the card, the balance is zero. You need to load money onto it.

At Subway Stations:

1. Find the Ticket Vending / Card Reload Device.

2. Select English on the screen.

3. Place your T-money card on the "T-money" sensor pad.

4. Choose the amount you want to charge (e.g., 10,000 KRW is a good start for 2-3 days).

5. Insert CASH.

⚠️ Buddy’s Warning: These machines ONLY accept Korean Won cash (bills). They do not accept credit cards for topping up. Always keep some 10,000 KRW or 1,000 KRW bills in your wallet for this!

At Convenience Stores:

If you don't have cash on you, some convenience stores might allow credit card top-ups, but it's rare. However, you can hand the clerk cash and your card and say, "Charge, please."

4. How to Use the Subway

1. Tap In: Approach the gate and place your card over the sensor on the right side. Listen for the "Beep!"

2. Ride: Follow the colored lines. The signs in Seoul subways are in English, Korean, Chinese, and Japanese.

3. Tap Out: This is crucial! You must tap your card again when you exit. If you don't, you may be charged double the fare on your next ride.

5. Buddy’s "Local Expert" Tips 💡

• Download the Right Apps: Google Maps works okay, but for the best accuracy, download Naver Map or KakaoMap. They have excellent English interfaces and show real-time subway arrivals.

• Transfer Rules: If you get off a subway and hop on a bus within 30 minutes, the bus ride is usually free or very cheap! Just remember to tap out when you leave the subway.

• Leaving Korea? If you have money left on the card (less than 20,000 KRW), you can get a refund at any convenience store (minus a small 500 KRW service fee). Or, just keep the card as a souvenir for your next trip—the balance lasts forever!

Safe travels! The Seoul subway is an adventure in itself. Grab your T-money card and start exploring.
